Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as an infant. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, as well as theatre. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
